City-Center, Helsinki

City-Center is one of Sponda’s prime development sites in the heart of Helsinki. We are refurbishing City-Center into a pleasant, airy and safe urban centre that will serve as a shopping arcade, a meeting point and place of work for thousands of people daily.

The revamped City-Center offers modern retail and office premises on ten floors. The new main entrance is being constructed on Keskuskatu, which is being changed into a pedestrian street. At the same time, the traffic ramps are being removed and service traffic will be redirected underground. The renovations are progressing in stages and the project is expected to be ready in 2012. We are endeavouring to minimize disruption caused by the renovation work and to secure the smooth continuation of clients’ activities throughout this time.

The plan for City-Center was approved in May 2006 and work on extending and renovating the office and retail centre started from the basement that same spring. In the autumn, the work progressed to the right wing. This phase was completed in April 2007 and the refurbished retail premises were opened for business in May. After the completion of the right wing, the renovation work began in the left wing of the real estate, wich after completion returned to business use in April 2008. Information regarding the businesses, wich have moved/are moving into the refurbished premises, can be found on the News and Shops pages.

At the moment construction work is going on in the basement of the property and other underground areas, where various shafts are being built for technical systems for the new service yard. The next major above-ground phase is expected to get underway towards the end of 2009, when construction will begin of the office building for Evli Bank Plc in the inner courtyard and of the new sotre premises replacing the parking deck. During this phase, the light shaft inte the building complex will also be built, which will bring daylight right down to the lowest level of the building, the tunnel level.
